Wide-Plank Flooring

Boards 7 inches and wider, run long — fewer seams, calmer sightlines, and the format that defines both modern Boise builds and McCall lakefront homes. Width raises the stakes on construction and installation.

Why Wide-Plank

Why It Works

Wider boards mean fewer joints per square foot, so the eye reads wood, not lines. In open-concept great rooms the effect is dramatic — the floor becomes a single quiet surface instead of a striped one.

The Physics of Width

Wood shrinks across its width as it dries. A 10" board shrinks roughly three times as much as a 3" strip in the same winter, so gaps that would be invisible in strip flooring become obvious in wide solid planks. This isn't a defect — it's arithmetic.

The Engineered Answer

Cross-laminated engineered cores restrain that movement, which is why virtually every wide-plank floor we install in Idaho is engineered. A thick sawn face keeps future re-sanding on the table while the core does the stability work.

Installation Standards

Wide planks telegraph subfloor flaws and demand better fastening — we glue-assist nail-downs and full-trowel glue over slabs, flatten subfloors to spec, and moisture-test before a single board is committed.

Best For

Great rooms, open floor plans, and anywhere long sightlines let the format breathe. It's the signature look for both mountain-modern builds up north and high-end remodels across the Treasure Valley.

How We Install It

Engineered construction, glue-assisted or full glue-down installation, documented moisture readings, and honest guidance on humidity control — width magnifies every shortcut, so we don't take any. See our wide-plank installation page for the full process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get solid wide-plank instead of engineered?

You can, but in Idaho's climate we rarely recommend it. Solid boards over about 5" wide are prone to visible winter gapping and cupping as indoor humidity swings. Engineered wide-plank with a thick wear layer gives you the same face with far better behavior.

How wide is too wide?

With quality engineered construction and a properly prepped subfloor, 9"–10" planks perform well in most homes. Beyond that, humidity control becomes non-negotiable. We'll be straight with you about what your home's conditions can support.

Does wide-plank work over radiant heat?

Yes — engineered wide-plank oak is the standard pairing for radiant slabs, installed to the manufacturer's surface-temperature limits. Solid wide-plank over radiant is a combination we decline.
